This past Saturday, the Law Office of Lauryn Tully was honored to sponsor and attend The Arc Pikes Peak Region's Awards Celebration. It was an evening full of gratitude, community, and inspiration, and we were proud to be in the room.
The Arc Pikes Peak Region advocates for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. Their work helps people get the support, rights, and respect they deserve. The celebration recognized the individuals, families, and partners who make that mission possible every day.
Why The Arc's mission matters to us
We love what The Arc stands for because it lines up so closely with what we believe as a firm: every person deserves to be seen, heard, and treated with dignity.
At our firm, we defend youth and adults charged with crimes across Colorado. Some of our clients live with intellectual or developmental disabilities, learning differences, or mental health challenges. For these clients and their families, the court system can be especially confusing and overwhelming.
When disability and the justice system meet
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities may face unique challenges when they come into contact with law enforcement or the courts. For example:
- Communication barriers. Legal terms, police questioning, and court procedures can be hard to follow without extra support.
- Misunderstood behavior. A disability-related response can be mistaken for defiance, dishonesty, or guilt.
- Pressure to agree. Some people may say "yes" to questions they don't fully understand, just to be helpful or end a stressful situation.
- Missed context. Without the full picture, a person's needs and circumstances may not be considered in their case.
That's why having an advocate who takes the time to understand the whole person can make a real difference.
How we represent every client
Whether our client is a teenager or an adult, and whatever their abilities, we build every defense on the same foundation:
- Listening first. We take the time to hear our clients' stories and explain things in plain, clear language.
- Seeing the whole person. Disability, school, family, health, and community all shape a case. We look beyond the charge.
- Working with families and supports. We welcome the people who know our clients best, including caregivers and support professionals, when our clients want them involved.
- Protecting your future. We fight to protect our clients' rights, independence, and opportunities wherever the law allows.
Our clients are people first, never just a case number.
Thank you, The Arc Pikes Peak Region
Congratulations to all of this year's honorees, and thank you to The Arc Pikes Peak Region for the work you do for our community. We're grateful to support an organization that champions inclusion, advocacy, and dignity for all.
